Is the layout of your booklet arranged and now you only want a thesis cover design? That is possible too! Together we will your research look stunning in a coherent design.

After our Skype conversation you will receive a number of (different) sketches, in which both your research and your personality are integrated in an illustrative and / or typographic image.

From these proposals you choose the sketch that makes you happy the moment you see it. Then comes the next round where style, color and typography is chosen, and you receive the last ‘sketch proposal in agreement’.

After that I will develop that proposal into a beautiful cover design. In addition, you will also receive an instructive example layout for your chapter pages, including the (adapted) cover illustration that is required for these pages.

Of course, the Thesis Cover Design – package includes the bookmarker invitation as well!

Ideas about America and Dutch identity in the public debate about media, 1919-1989 (In Dutch)

Background information:
Jesper Verhoef asked me to work with the old image of Uncle Sam and a Dutch woman in old fashioned clothing. Inspired by ‘Het Melkmeisje’, a painting by Vermeer, I drew a new, more resilient woman, fighting her own ‘shadow’ in the shape of Uncle Sam. The colors are based on the typically Dutch colors: Blue, white, red and orange. The clock shows it’s five to 12. The Dutch saying ‘5 minutes to 12, has the meaning that the situation is on the verge of disaster; it’s time for change, before it’s too late.

Background information:
Nicoline asked for a typographic cover design, but also really wanted it to have a ‘human’ look. The hand-made ink drops & ink strokes, the special paper for the cover + a quote from Socrates ensure this. The flaps give the dissertation a real ‘book feeling’. Her love for indigo blue helped in choosing the color.

Background information:

Shamir (from Curaçao) wanted his thesis cover to radiate a hopeful future. The cover illustration shows you an rising sun above the Caribbean waters, as well as an encapsulated virus, above the lungs in the sea. The lungs are showing little signs of degradation, but so is the virus. The paint & color choices were based on Shamirs style and personality.

Background information:
Nienke asked me for a ‘clean design’. Her dissertation deals with the obstacles encountered by older people and ways to help these elderly people. The Staircase is a metaphor for the ‘obstacles’ for the elderly, but also for ascending, a choice (up or down) and finally the door that opens to the outside world. In this abstract illustration, the circles behind the image symbolize the ‘protection of the safety net’, like the connecting dots in the pink circle symbolize all external help.

From the first meeting with Anne-Marie Scheepers it was clear it was very important that the link with ‘cooperation’ between pharmacists and doctors was important. Alert methods is about digitally alerting people about medication issues. This cover design integrates the digital world of icons, the invisible world of ‘the processing’ and the real world of medical staff and pharmacists into one illustration.

Background information:
The cells that are subject of this research, look a little bit like the fluffy dandelions floating in the air. This was the inspiration for this cover illustration. The kidney-shaped B in the title makes sure it’s clear what the main theme is. The colorpalet as well as illustration style is based on Elena’s personal preferences. Drawing each dandelion by hand, and making sure the ‘cell particles’ were correct was a precise, but fun job.

Background information:
In our first meeting, Hester Trompetter told me that she really loved the Monarch butterfly. I found that the free movement of the butterfly was a nice symbolism for being ‘free of pain’. Almost all the butterflies are individually illustrated by hand. The cell structure is inspired by a figure from her thesis, and is spread across the cover like symmetrical flowers.

Airin Simon told me in the first interview; “Fighting a hydra, that’s how it feels to deal with the problems discussed in my dissertation – hence the title”. She wanted that seven-headed beast to be the subject of her cover illustration. Of course, the Color Palette and the illustration style are based on the personal preferences of Airin.
